Building Digital China: Strive to form the discipline research direction of "Digital Economy and Data Science"

Lingnan (University) College is making efforts on creating "Digital Economy and Data Science" as the interdisciplinary research direction. This is a significant practice of educational innovation, aiming to resolve major issues in digital economy, and eventually achieve the ultimate goal of production, learning, and research combination.

The College is enthusiastic about cultivating future business professionals with solid foundation of economic theories as well as mathematical, economic, and computing application abilities. The students who complete the course are expected to have a comprehensive skill set to make analysis and decisions in terms of national economic and social problems. The purpose of creating Digital Economy and Data Science is to improve students’ adaptive capacity towards complex and changing business environment as well as the trend of interdisciplinary integration.

Such a disciplinary innovation is in response to both national strategic needs and also the tendency of subject development among Chinese universities. China is planning on accelerating digital development, increasing advantages of the digital economy, and jointly promoting digital industrialization and digital transformation of industries in order to construct a digital society. From an academic perspective, research on Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing and Big Data is growing rapidly while innovative applications in relevant digital industries are emerging. It is a challenge for Chinese research institutions, governments, and industries to cooperatively build a complete industrial ecology in the digital era.
