Breaking News | Our Alumnus Chen Guangzhe Appointed as Vice President of the World Bank
On February 1, 2023, Chen Guangzhe, our alumnus, was appointed as Vice President of the World Bank.
Chen Guangzhe
Chen Guangzhe was an undergraduate majoring in economics and enrolled in 1980 and a postgraduate in political economics in 1985 at Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University.
Chen Guangzhe is mainly responsible for infrastructure construction, where he will be committed to building sustainable infrastructure in developing countries and emerging economies, and assist in supporting the World Bank in major strategic development, such as actions against global climate changes.
Before serving as the Vice President of the World Bank, Chen Guangzhe worked as the Senior Director of the World Bank Transport Global Practice, the Senior Director of the World Bank Global Water Practice, the Director of the World Bank in Ethiopia, and the Director of the World Bank in Southern Africa.
Chen Guangzhe is also an economist that graduated from the Department of Economics of Harvard University. He has more than 25 years of international experience in the fields of sustainable development, and infrastructure financing and management at the World Bank Group and the Asian Development Bank.

As an alumnus, Chen Guangzhe has been paying attention to and supporting the development of the university. On January 22, 2020, the first "Lingnan International Forum" was held in Washington, D.C., USA. Chen Guangzhe, then Senior Director of the World Bank Transport Global Practice, was invited and enthusiastically supported it by giving speeches. In September 2019, the then Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Lingnan College and his companions went to North America to visit its alumni. On the September 19, they visited the World Bank and were warmly received by alumni Chen Guangzhe and Gui Benqing.
The alma mater has always attached great importance to and paid attention to the development of alumni. The alumni have worked hard, showcased their talent, and created outstanding achievements in respective fields, which constitute the best gift to the alma mater.
