2021 International Advisory Board Meeting Held by Lingnan College, Sun Yat-sen University

Nov. 20, 2021 marked the 9th International Advisory Board (IAB) Meeting for Lingnan College, Sun Yat-sen University, which was held online due to Covid-19 pandemic. The IAB was established in 2012, composed by leaders from world-renewed multinationals, presidents and deans from well-known universities, and heads of the national and regional economic departments. Once a year, the IAB members meet to provide advice on and suggest resources for the strategic development of Lingnan College.

Professor LI Shanmin, Dean of Lingnan College, delivered an opening remark, extending his warmest welcome and sincere gratitude to all IAB Members. He then introduced a series of measures to strengthen development of the disciplines of Theoretical Economics and Applied Economics. Professor CHEN Gang, Associate Dean of Lingnan College presented an overview of the development progress Lingnan had made over the past one year. At the end of the presentation, he expressed that the College would like to seek support from IAB Members in terms of developing the disciplines of Economics and Finance, deepening international cooperation, introducing talents, and expanding students’ global view.

During the discussion session, Board Members congratulated Lingnan on its impressive achievements over the past one year. Many Board Members encouraged Lingnan to focus efforts in the research areas of Carbon Neutrality, Big Data Analysis and Digital Economy, and to fully weigh the impact of the technology on the whole society in the Pandemic era, while others suggested the College should give full play to its geographical advantages in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and shoulder more social responsibilities in the backdrop of growing gap between the world’s rich and poor.

Professor LIU Mingkang concluded the Meeting by thanking the Board Members for their constructive suggestions. He believed that in the future, Lingnan should commit itself to developing its undergraduate education, in an effort to cultivate high-caliber talents with innovated thinking and inter-disciplinary skills. Lingnan should make every effort to develop the discipline of Economics, and make its due contribution in the national think-tank projects for the Greater Bay Area to help realize the objectives in the country’s strategic plan. In the end, Professor LIU stressed the importance of collaborating with other departments and colleges within the University to conduct cross-disciplinary projects and courses.
