The 2017 SYSU KNAW-LINGNAN Summer School on Experimental Economics

From August 9th to 14th, the one-week program SYSU KNAW-LINGNAN Summer School on Experimental Economics reached a great success in Guangzhou. Jointly organized by Lingnan (University) College SYSU and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, this program has attracted more than 40 scholars and postgraduate students from renowned universities of China, Netherlands, Germany, the USA, Australia, etc. Besides, 10 more professors and students from famous universities in China audited classes of the program.

 

On the morning of Aug 9th, Associate Professor Liu Jianhua, Deputy Head of Department of Finance, delivered a speech on behalf of Lingnan (University) College. The program was taught by Professor Arthur Schram and Associate Professor Sander Onderstal from Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Assistant Professor Zhao Xiaojian from HKUST Business School, while Assistant Professor Yang Yang from Department of Economics of Lingnan (University) College was in charge of the organization of the program.

The program was delivered in diverse forms, including lectures in Economics, group discussions, laboratory implementation and mentor's instruction. Program contents included experimental methodology, experimental economics and experimental data analysis methods, involving subjects such as behavioral economics (public goods, bargain and social preference), industrial organization (auction, double auction and market advantage), individual decision (expected utility and probability weight) and market design.

Characterized by different teaching styles, professors introduced skills in design and organization of economic experiments and shed light on current development of experimental economics, such as the development of theories of behavioral economics, and field experiments. Students actively interacted with professors in lectures, joined the group discussion, and asked professors questions after class, creating lively atmosphere of learning. The various themes provided students with all-dimension prospective and understanding of experimental economics, and inspired creative thoughts for in-depth learning.

During the one-week program, students not only studied experimental economics theories, but also worked in groups to design and conduct experiments on subjects that they were interested in with the help from professors, and analyzed the data using scientific statistic analysis.

On the afternoon of Aug 13th, the closing ceremony of SYSU KNAW-LINGNAN Summer School on Experimental Economics was held in the Room 801 of Lingnan MBA Building. Professor Arthur Schram and Associate Professor Sander Ondersta from Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Amsterdam, and Assistant Professor Yang Yang from Department of Economics of Lingnan (University) College awarded certificates of completion to students. On Aug 14th, program came to an end with a day trip in Guangzhou. Students expressed that they gained a lot from the program. Besides more knowledge of experimental economics and self improvement, they have made friends and had in-depth exchanges with professors and classmates, which is valuable experience for them.
