Teaching Experience Sharing Session held in Lingnan (University) College

On the afternoon of Dec. 28, 2019,a teaching experience sharing session , was organized at the W.T.Chan Auditorim of Lingnan (University) College for the purpose of further improvement of our teaching quality. . The school also invited faculty from our peer colleges to join this event with us. The meeting was conducted by Associate Professor LIU Yanchu, the assistant Dean. Dean LU Jun gave the opening address, and then our faculty, lecturer HUANG He, associate professor LIN Jianhao, lecturer JIAO Qian, assistant professor DAI Yun, shared their experiences from different perspectives.

Dean LU indicatedin his speech that, to faculty, lecturingis equally important as academic research.. A teacher’s behaviorand manner as well asthe perspectives the facultyexpressedduring the classmayhave significant impacts on students’ personal and career development.Our school has always valued the undergraduate teaching.Our education reformationhas been deployed since the early years, and great efforts have been devoted especially in the allocation of teaching resources, curriculum design, and teaching evaluation.This sharing sessionserves as a communicating platform for faculty to interact with each other, exchange their views, share their experiences, and to make mutual progress.

Lecturer HUANG He used the theme of “To Convince Your Audience” of the course Communication as an example, shared her experience on how to organize cases in teaching.The lecturers could see themselves as a scriptwriter of a case in teaching activities. She also discussed time management during classes, balancing students’ voluntary speaking, and managing class-debatesaround the cases.

Lecturer HUANG He Sharing her Teaching Experience

 

Associate Professor LIN Daomiao fromthe Department of Business Management brought  her speech “Enlightenment from Movies: How to managethe Pace of a Class”, in which she compared the course-design to the development of plots in a movie encompassing starting, following, turning, and closing. She shared herexperience of how to shape students a sense of trust in the meaning of a course at the beginning, and then it would be easier to output knowledge. It is also important to recognize students’ questions and respond timely while encourage them to think out of the box, and bring students inspirations through the process.

Associate Professor Lin Daomiao Sharing her Teaching Experience

 

Associate Professor LIN Jianhao fromthe Department of Economics, has been teaching Econometrics to all undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoralstudents.He shared his exploration and reflectionson managing the diversity of the students, which can be concluded in five  themes: “Invariabilityvs. Seeking Changes”, “Fast Era and Slow Education”, “Looking forward vs. Looking back”, to reduce the limitation in the information era and the importance of teacher-students’ mutual learning, and the shifted role of teachers from “the knowledge spreader” to “the learning assistant”, and probably turning into “a learning partner” in the future.

The topic shared by JIAO Qian, who is a lecturer fromthe Department of Economicswas “Teaching benefits both students and lecturers – Exploration on Teaching ‘Hard Course’ in English”. Ms. JIAO raised a question that how to tell whether students have fully understand a subject. She pointed out that it is not enough for lecturers to know thecourse.To ensure studentshave a comprehensive understanding of the courses is the true achievement. She then demonstrated the instance of teaching Intermediate Microeconomics in English insuch ateaching mode of course-teaching-team-cooperation: team preparation and unification of PowerPoint slides; weekly team meeting; designing examination papers collaboratively, grading exam papers and assignments, ensure fairness; and being open to external examiners for course quality evaluations, teaching methods and teacher-students relationships.

Assistant Professor Dai Yun fromthe Department of Finance started her presentation with Confucius words “Teachers are those who teach you knowledge, coach you skills, and illuminate your confusions”, and then discussed the different approaches to manage the active-passive relationships between the teacher and the students, including: how to guide the freshmen toadapt to “college learning”; how to increasestudents’ motivation of industry studying by showing them news, relevant events, and interesting case studies; how to draw a connection between the students and the course by making students to take the lead of their learning; how to help students to apply those theories in real life; how to combine current affairs and celebrities with the original characters in cases for more resonation between the textbook and their every-day life.

The five topics covered different aspects and shared from different angels in education. They were all impressive as the lines in Book of Songs “Gentlemen learning from each other are like grinding the jade.” In the conclusion of the meeting, Dean LU Jun extended his appreciation and recognition to every speaker for their devoted preparation and generous sharing. He expressed his expectation on the faculty to continue such a momentumin order to make greater accomplishments. At the same time, Lingnan (University) College also looked forward to the further cooperation with our peer schools, and to promote innovation in education together. The meeting ended in warm applause.
