WANG ShouyangChair Professor

Wang Shouyang is a Distinguished Research Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has been selected for a major national talent program and is a recipient of an NSFC Excellence grant. He is Director of the Center for Forecasting Science and serves as Editor-in-Chief, Executive Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, or editorial board member for 12 academic journals in Europe and North America.


His past and concurrent appointments include Executive Deputy Director of the Department of Management Sciences at the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); Party Secretary and Vice President of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, CAS; Dean of the School of Economics and Management at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Dean of the School of Entrepreneurship and Management at ShanghaiTech University; President of the Systems Engineering Society of China; President of the International Society for Knowledge and Systems Sciences; Vice President of the International Society of Global Optimization; Vice President of the International Association of Financial Risk Management; and Executive Board Member of both the International Institute of Forecasters and the Asia Pacific Industrial Engineering and Management Society. He has also served on the Review Committee of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a disciplinary appraisal panel of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and numerous expert committees of government agencies, including the National Development and Reform Commission.


His research in decision analysis, complex data modeling and analysis, supply chain management, financial innovation and risk management, economic analysis and forecasting, and energy and environmental economics and policy analysis has earned high recognition from international peers and considerable attention from government decision-making agencies. He has published 47 scholarly monographs, including 23 English-language monographs published in Europe and North America, and more than 520 papers in leading international journals, including Science, Nature, journals in the Science and Nature families, PNAS, Management Science, Journal of Econometrics, and Journal of Economic Theory. More than 500 of these papers are indexed in SCI/SSCI, and his work has received over 38,000 SCI/SSCI citations.


He has submitted more than 400 policy research reports to the central authorities and relevant national ministries and commissions. More than 200 have received important written instructions from national leaders, including the General Secretary. Many of his policy recommendations have been adopted by the government and incorporated into economic and industrial policies. His research has received provincial and ministerial awards for scientific and technological progress or outstanding achievements, including two special prizes, 11 first prizes, 14 second prizes, and seven third prizes. He has also received five major international awards, including the Scott Award. His honors include Outstanding Communist Party Member of CAS, Outstanding Worker of CAS, National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, and National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker in COVID-19 Prevention and Control.


He has an outstanding record in mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Among those he has supervised, four have received the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, four have received the Nomination Award for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, and 14 have received the CAS Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. Nine are recipients of NSFC Excellence grants, eight have been selected for major national talent programs, and more than 20 have been selected for high-level talent programs administered by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. He has repeatedly been jointly honored by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education as a Supervisor of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, and has received the CAS Outstanding Graduate Supervisor honor 14 times.
