摘要:
     China’s Third Front Construction (TFC) in the 1960s and 1970s led to the relocation and establishment of hundreds of large and medium-sized factories in the western inland provinces, which generated exogenous linkages between cities in the western (Third Front) and eastern (First Front) regions. We use newly assembled data on historical factory connections and contemporary patent records to examine how these state-induced linkages shaped the geography of innovation. Despite the termination of the TFC in 1978, city pairs connected through factory relocations continue to produce significantly more collaborative patents and to cite each other’s patents more frequently between 1985 and 2019. These collaborations generate higher-quality innovations, and the citation patterns reveal persistent, directional knowledge spillovers from coastal to inland cities. Evidence from population census, household, and enterprise surveys indicates that these relationships are anchored by enduring migration, intermarriage, and entrepreneurial ties, as well as by sustained online search behavior and culinary affinities. Our findings demonstrate that exogenous social ties forged initially for non-economic purposes can durably shape interregional knowledge flows and collaborative innovation, revealing a long-term mechanism through which state-led industrialization policies reconfigure the geography of ideas.

报告人介绍：

       高明，现任北京大学经济学院长聘副教授、博士生导师，北京大学博雅青年学者，入选国家级青年人才计划。研究领域涵盖金融学、劳动经济学、区域与发展经济学，主持和参与多项国家自然科学基金项目，学术成果发表于《经济研究》《金融研究》《管理世界》和Journal of Financial Economics等中英文顶级期刊，政策报告被证监会、国家知识产权局、退役军人事务部等相关部门采纳。他于北京大学光华管理学院取得经济学学士和博士学位，并于北京大学国际关系学院取得法学学士学位，曾担任普林斯顿大学访问学者。
