摘要:
       Adolescent marriage and childbearing have experienced a resurgence in China over the past decade. This paper investigates the role of rising sex ratios in explaining this trend. Using a difference-in-differences framework, we find that a one standard deviation increase in the sex ratio leads to a 0.24 percentage point increase in the adolescent marriage rate and a 0.31 percentage point increase in the adolescent pregnancy rate among daughters from households with a first son, relative to those from households with a first daughter. A back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that the rise in sex ratios explains approximately 20% of the overall growth in China’s adolescent childbearing during this period. Further analysis reveals that higher sex ratios are associated with increased marriage gifts for sons, reflecting intensified competition in the marriage market. Finally, daughters from first-son households attain lower levels of education compared to those from first-daughter households in regions with high sex ratios.

报告人介绍：

       赵丽秋，中国人民大学劳动人事学院劳动经济系教授、系主任，国家发展与战略研究院研究员，经济学博士。她的研究领域涵盖劳动经济学、发展经济学和区域经济学。赵教授毕业于比利时鲁汶大学（经济学博士），并曾在德国慕尼黑大学担任访问学者。她于2012年加入中国人民大学，历任助理教授、副教授，2023年晋升为教授。其研究成果丰硕，包括在Journal of Health Economics等国际期刊发表论文，探讨公共长期护理保险对老年家庭消费的影响等议题。
