Prof. Liu Mingkang, Honorary Dean of Lingnan, gave the first presentation entitled “2019 Market Challenges and Opportunities.” He identified five major challenges in the future global market, including the normalization of global interest rates, a strong US dollar against currency crises in emerging markets, US-China trade conflicts and uncertainties, global credit market re-pricing and the return of inflation. However, he also identified opportunities, including more reasonable equity market valuations, an EM asset-class assessment at a decade low, M&A opportunities due to low equity valuations and cash squeezes, non-performing asset trading, management, and restructuring and FinTech. In addition, Prof. Liu discussed the development of Lingnan College and its advisory board. He suggested that the agenda of the annual meeting should include going over work done as follow-up to the preceding board meeting. He also shared his ideas on faculty development. Prof. Liu finished by talking about integrating future technology and forward thinking to the EMBA program, so as to re-position itself, optimize the curriculum and the faculty, and develop a lifelong educational program. He also hoped board members could provide more support to Lingnan faculty and students through further visits to the college.

Benjamin Hung pointed out that Lingnan’s geographic presence at the hub of the Hong Kong-Macao-Guangzhou Greater Bay Area is a unique advantage. He emphasized the necessity for Lingnan to create a hallmark interdisciplinary curriculum to capitalize on these advantages.
