Cheating to gain a competitive advantage occurs in all aspects of life. Despite this, little is known about how the opportunity to cheat impacts willingness to compete, and how this might impact different genders. We report data from a laboratory experiment showing that men shy away from competition when it is possible to cheat to gain competitive advantage. Women remain equally likely to compete regardless of whether the competition is fair. Men generally display greater competitiveness than women, with the exception of honest men facing a possible competitive disadvantage. These men display the same (low) level of competitiveness as women.
