Lingnan, An Accomplished Year of 2019!

In 2019, coincided with the thirtieth anniversary of the establishment of Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University, the college adheres to the “three orientations” development goals, reflects the characteristics of the “three major development” disciplines, cooperates with the national strategy and the allocation of college resources, and all teachers and students work together to uphold the concept of “Service Education”, deepening the development of all disciplines. The school has been developing in all aspects, and the “double first-class” construction has achieved remarkable results.

International rankings

  1. In the latest ESI ranking on January 10, 2020, Sun Yat-sen University's economics and business disciplines are among the top 1% of ESI disciplines globally.
  2. In the 2020 THE rankings in 2019, Sun Yat-sen University is ranked sixth in economics in mainland universities.
  3. In the 2020 QS rankings in 2019, the College’s Global Masters in International Business programme is ranked 11th globally and the 1st in the Asia-Pacific region.
  4. In the 2019 FT ranking, the college's EMBA program ranks 93rd in the world, and the 3rd independent school project in mainland China.
  5. In the Bloomberg Business School Ranking in 2019, Lingnan ranked 7th in the Asia Pacific region.

 

Discipline Achievements

  1. In 2019, Lingnan published 64 papers in high-level journals at home and abroad. Among them, 19 Chinese papers were published in A-level journals; 17 papers were published in B-level journals; 9 papers were published (accepted) in international top A+ and A- level journals, and 19 papers were published in B+ level journals. The output per person of Chinese and English papers ranks top 3 among domestic economic management schools.
  2. Starting from 2000 to 2019, Sun Yat-sen University published a total of 41 papers in UTD, the top academic journal of business administration, 25 of which were from Lingnan College, accounting for 60%.
  3. The academic journal jointly run by the college and Oxford University Press entered SSCI.
  4. We published 10 academic books and funded 3 sets of books.
  5. Lingnan cooperated with the Business School of Lingnan University in Hong Kong and signed the Letter of Intent, Building Together a Greater Bay Area Insurance and Risk Management Institute.
  6. The undergraduate majors of economics and finance of the college were selected as national first-class undergraduate majors.
  7. In 2019, the College had added 78 new research topics, including 9 national natural science projects and 3 national social science projects, of which Professor Lu Jun’s and Professor Chen Ping’s were approved as special projects of national-level major research projects. Since 2015, the college had received 7 major project funding from the national social science fund.
  8. A total of 63 academic forums and academic exchange meetings were held; academic exchange meetings for teachers and students of Lingnan College was held.

Scientific Research Achievements

  1. The national Natural Science Fund Project achieved excellent results in the post-assessment, including 1 “extremely excellent” and 6 “excellent”.
  2. Professor Yang Zihui's thesis won the first prize of The Eighth Outstanding Achievement Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Guangdong.
  3. Professor Wang Xi's thesis won the second prize of The Eighth Outstanding Achievement Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Guangdong.
  4. The case written by Professor Chen Honghui and lecturer Xu Yuehua won the Nomination Award of the 2018 Best International Case Award of China’s Business Administration. This is the first time our scholar won this award.
  5. Prof. Wang Xiaohui's project won the Excellent Award of Excellent Achievements of the 2018 Event “I Offer Suggestions for the Development of Guangzhou” by the Guangzhou United Front.
  6. Professor Chen Honghui's thesis won the first prize of the First Academic Symposium on Management Philosophy, Research Methods and Chinese Management Practice.
  7. Professor Chen Ping's thesis won the first prize of Excellent Paper in 2018 issued by the editorial department of International Financial Research.

 

Teacher Training

  1. Lingnan strengthened the training and recruitment of talents, and more than 20 talents of various types were recruited, including 3 full/associate professors.
  2. Lingnan held recruitment events in top overseas universities in the United States, Europe, Singapore and other countries, and recruitments in top domestic universities, such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, etc. Lingnan participated in the recruitment interview of the American Economics Annual Conference.
  3. Lingnan held teacher-student academic exchange meetings, teacher teaching experience sharing meetings, national project application report meetings, etc.

  1. The News Center of Tianjin TV sent a letter and thanked Professor Xu Xianxiang.
  2. The Department of Income Tax of the State Taxation Administration sent a letter to Associate Professor Nie Haifeng to express their gratitude.
  3. The Office of the Guangdong Foreign Affairs Committee of the Communist Party expresses its gratitude to Professor Lu Jun.
  4. The Management of the State Council Medical Reform Secretariat expressed its gratitude to Professor Shen Shuguang.

  10. Professor Lu Jun was hired as a member of the Expert Committee of Developing the Warranty Industry and Promoting Corporate Financing of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology.
  11. Professor Lu Jun is employed by the Ministry of Education as an expert on culture exchanges between China and foreign countries.
  12. Professor Liao Junping was elected as a member of the 9th Committee of the Democratic Construction Association of Guangdong Province.
  13. Professor Lu Jun was appointed as the director of the managing members of the Guiding Committee of Finance Teaching of Guangdong Higher Education, Professor Yang Zihui was appointed as the associate director of the managing members, and Professor Zeng Yan was appointed as the Secretary General; Professor Lu Rui was appointed as the Deputy director of the managing members of the Guiding Committee of the Advanced Continuing Education of Guangdong Province; Professor Xu Xianxiang was appointed as the deputy director of the managing members of the Guiding Committee of Economics Teaching of the Advanced Education in Guangdong Province; Professor Cai Guowei was appointed as the director of the managing members of the Guiding Committee of Economic and Trade Teaching of the Advance Education of Guangdong Province; Professor Zhang Bin was hired as the associate director of the managing members of the Guiding Committee of Undergraduate Education of Management Science and Engineering of Guangdong Province.
  14. The 8th Lingnan Forum was successfully held, widely recognized by many.
  15. The 8th International Advisory Board meeting was successfully held.
  16. The Lingnan Lectures was successfully held.
  17. The thousand-people celebration for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Lingnan College was successfully held.

  19. Interviews with prestige teachers and outstanding alumni have been carried out successfully.
  20. A series of academic conferences celebrating the establishment of the college were successfully held.
  21. Teachers and students were organized to go to Shaoguan and visit the Sun Yat-sen University and the former Lingnan University during the Anti-Japanese War.

Student Training

  1. In 2019, the rate of undergraduate students who continued to further study was 58%; 106 students went abroad (or out of mainland China) for further study, 94% entered the top 100 universities in the world; others chose to go to the first-tier universities in mainland, such as Beijing University, Qinghua University, Fudan University or Shanghuai Jiaotong University for their graduate study. 78% in economics and 64% in finance of the undergraduates went on for graduate study.
  2. The enrollment of the undergraduate-graduate-Ph.D programme attracted the best students to Sun Yat-sen University, and the proportion of undergraduates directly enrolled to Ph.d programmes has increased significantly.
  3. Professor Zhou Xianbo won the first prize of Guangdong Teaching Achievement Award.
  4. Lingnan held the first national seminar on the undergraduate thesis of economics and management.
  5. 16 additional industry mentors were hired, and 1 external examiner was newly hired.
  6. The undergraduates had won many championships in various sports events; the college won the first prize of the team competition of the top ten students’ sports events of “Kangle Cup”.

 

International Exchange

  1. The students of the 3rd three-country programme successfully graduated; Lingnan also successfully finished the enrollment of the 4th three-country project, admitting 9 Chinese students.
  2. The 2019 Yale/Oxford—Global Leadership Project was successfully concluded. A new agreement with the Yale Association and St Edmund Hall of Oxford University was signed.
  3. We signed a student exchange cooperation agreement with the NHH-Norwegian School of Economics, reached a cooperation intention with the French NEOMA Business School, and the Korean Sungkyunkwan University.
  4. Lingnan received delegates of Mr. Nicolas Chapuis from the European Union Ambassador, the President of St. Petersburg State Economic University, and the President of AirAsia.
  5. In cooperation with the international academic organization COMPASSS, the QCA International Academic Conference was planned to be held.
  6. With the help of the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC & U) Lingnan used their annual meeting platform to plan the first Lingnan International Forum. This meeting was scheduled to take place on January 22 to 23, 2020 in Washington, DC, USA.

 

Alumni-related Work

  1. On May 11, 2019, Qingyuan Alumni Association of Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University was established.
  2. On December 29, 2019, the Establishment of the Macao Alumni Association of Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University and the Inaugural Ceremony of the First Supervisors were held in Macau.
  3. The alumni mentor programme engaged 62 alumni mentors in 2019.
