To me, CHEMBA is a name with affections:
A CHOICE FOLLOWING MY HEART
14 years ago, in 2007, I got a recognition as High Potential from company, offering me a sponsorship of a further learning program in China – I can choose anyone MBA/EMBA program all over the China and the company would pay. Among all the programs I decided to choose CHEMBA because its curriculum are really for global and local which would definitely become a basic requirement for Chinese leaders in the next decades along with China’s economy growth.
When I started the CHEMBA journey, I found it a right decision: The courses were designed with right mix—5 finance related courses from Financial Accounting, to Managerial Accounting, to Corporate Finance, then to Advance Finance, and to Macro Economy, equipping us with financial knowledge and skills to gradually understand what business is and to run it. Based on that, Strategy Management, Marketing Management, Information Management, Organization and Human Resources Management, Legal and Leadership building on. I was a specialized in HR function before CHEMBA, after going through the whole journey, I got the whole business framework of business – it’s also a critical enabler in my career development after graduation from CHEMBA: to CHRO, to corporate VP and to entrepreneur.
VTP (Virtual Team Project)is the most exciting and valuable part of CHEMBA program –forming the team from China, US and Europe, we set up our business plan by collecting market information, doing business analysis, finding business opportunities, and designing the business model, strategies, organization and team, etc. Going through dozens of conference calls and emails, more than 10 versions of revision of the business plan, we explored our eye-sights from local to global. Finally when we met each others on US campus for project presentation, the virtual team came true! That's a fantastic experience in my life.
PROFESSORS WITH HIGH STANDARDS
Professors in CHEMBA are all strict in terms of teaching and assignment standard. A very impressive case I often share with my colleagues when we try to bargain on timeline or standard: January 2008, we finished the course of Operation Management, some of the students tried to bargain with professor to reduce some of the written assignments. Professor Anderson asked why. The answer is because CNY was coming, students would be busy in visiting clients or attending dinners. Someone said, “Professor, don’t forget, we are part-time EMBA students, not full-time! We are very busy!” Professor Anderson said, “Yes, I know you are part-time students. After graduation, when you seek a new job, can you accept a half-cut in your salary because you are part-time EMBA? If not, why do you think you can do half of assignments but enjoy same increase of your market value? Guys, it’s not about assignment, it’s about attitude and your values.” –Yes, why do you think you are enjoy a full return with half efforts? Silent. Nobody say anything more. In that CNY holiday, each one of us worked very hard to complete the 7 case write-ups and a team paper, but nobody complains. This is a learning on value and leadership.
CLASSMATES WITH LOVE
CHEMBA 7 is a class with love. We founded the Mingling Charity Foundation because we thought we should not just group together for a 2-year study, but should also do something benefiting the community. We are so glad to see Mingling Charity Foundation still runs well and keeping helping children in poor areas by CHEMBA students year on year.
CHEMBA 7 is a closely tightened class. After 14 years, we are now still actively interacting with the fellows. Some of the small groups, even active EVERY in WeChat groups, discussing macro economy, investment projects, career, personal life, etc.
THE ACADEMIC AWARD WITH HONOR
The academic award is a big recognition to my efforts in this 2-year study. Still remember the honor: in the big hall, hundreds of EMB/EMBA/Ph.D graduates and their families sitting there, the moderator asked the award receivers, those who wore yellow cord, to stand upand accept the applauses from all. At the moment, I know, the honor went to my family and all the classmates, team fellows and professors who helped me.
Last week, when I opened the files trying to find some pictures wearing yellow cord, I found 2 interesting ones: one is Atwood, my husband, helping me wearing my yellow cord, in 2009. Another one is Atwood himself stood on the graduation hall wearing yellow cord in 2015. Yes, he decided to join CHEMBA after getting to know this great program from me and my classmates.
Once someone asked me what would be my comments on CHEMBA in one or two sentences. My answer is : I took CHEMBA from a company sponsorship, but after finished the study, I found I would still choose it even if I’d pay by myself. It’s worthy of more than the tuition.
