COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on the competitive strategy of the firm, examining issues central to its long- and short-term competitive position. Students are placed in the role of key decision makers and asked to address questions related to the creation or reinforcement of competitive advantage.  The initial focus is on industry analysis and competitive advantage as it derives from the firm's strategic investments. We study the nature of global strategy and also how the nature of strategy is different in an internet world.  The process through which strategic change takes place is then examined. We conclude by addressing the development of firm-specific capabilities and core competences that contribute to a firm’s competitive advantage.

The Concept of Strategy & Strategic Management

Industry Analysis 

Issues:  What is an attractive industry?  How do you evaluate the attractiveness of an industry?  What are barriers to the entry of firms into attractive industries?  

Global Strategy

Issues: What is strategy in a global environment?  How is this distinct from operating in a domestic market? What factors account for successful globalization?

 

Aug.24 Saturday Afternoon 13:00-18:00

Corporate Strategy: Strategy in a multi-business firm

Issues: What is strategy in a multi-business firm?  How is this distinct from business level strategy? Why do firms diversify? How do multi-business corporations create value?

Competing on the Internet 

Issues: What is the role of the internet in the business strategy of a firm?  How has the internet changed the business landscape?  What is the effect of the internet on Porter’s five-forces? What is the role of network externalities in a firm’s internet strategy? What is the role of first mover advantage and standards in creating sustainable competitive advantage?

Strategy Implementation and Corporate Culture

Issues: How do firms organize for action?  How do firms manage and leverage knowledge? What are the organizational issues in the successful implementation of strategies? What is the link between organizational culture and strategy?

The Core Competence of the Corporate and Sustainability of Competitive Advantage

Issues: What is the strength of a firm's competitive position in an industry?  What are the sources of competitive advantage for firms?  When is competitive advantage sustainable?  What is the notion of core competence?

Strategy Implementation and Execution

Issues: Good strategies do not warrant successes. What are the key elements of organization and execution that drive successes? Why organizations fail to execute even with the right market conditions and sufficient resources? How CEOs turn around their business?

Domestic Growth vs Global Strategy

Issues: With the current geopolitical environment, globalization is shifting to a new model. What are the new approaches global companies taking to continue business growth and to leverage global resources? What are the options for Chinese companies for globalization?
