Join Rand Park and fellow China Executive MBA and Medical Industry MBA alumni and students for a timely discussion of the ethical issues of a popular class of weight loss drugs.

Ethical Issues Arising from the Use of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists:
How a "Dark Forest" Strategy has created a "Three Body Problem"
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy) have been touted as the new "miracle" medications, addressing chronic health issues like Type 2 diabetes and obesity. These drugs are prescribed, however, not just for disease treatment and prevention, but also for rapid weight loss leading to the physical appeal of being thin.
Celebrities across the world have publicly touted the ease of their weight loss via these drugs, which has created a strong consumer demand for GLP-1 receptor agonists that far outstrips current supply. Fair allocation of available GLP-1 drugs, the use of the drugs for cosmetic desires vs. clinical needs, and the maximizing of GLP-1 drug profits by pharmaceutical companies are among the ethical issues that will be addressed in this lecture.
