CHMB5803 Supply Chain & Operations
Course Description
This course is designed to help you learn the fundamental body of knowledge on supply chain and operations. We will take a broad managerial decision-making perspective, emphasizing the strategic impact of supply chain and operations management and the interfaces with other functional areas of a firm. You will learn widely accepted principles for managing supply chain and operations and have an opportunity to debate how these might be applied. The course uses case studies that require class discussion. The capstone paper gives you a chance to dig deeper into a supply chain concept or investigate what you learned in class in the context of a local company.
The course will be divided into two parts: a) the first part taught by Professor Chen, and b) the second part taught by Professor Natarajan.
Overview of the Course – Part 1
The first half of the course will concentrate on current issues faced by managers and executives in contemporary production, strategic outsourcing, chain stores management, and e-commerce logistics within Greater China. We will examine why and how production, operations, and supply chain management are strategically important to a firm’s success, as well as the difficulties, challenges, and opportunities in transforming supply chain and operations management. We will also examine these issues particularly within the context of the current stage of infrastructural reforms in China.
Overview of the Course – Part 2
The second half of the course, taught by Professor Natarajan, will explore several key topics including supply chain and operations strategy, supply chain coordination, technology as an enabler of new supply chain and business models, supply chain risk management, and sustainable supply chain management. Specifically, we will focus on: (i) the importance of alignment between a firm’s business strategy and supply chain and operations strategy, (ii) information sharing and coordination challenges that arise in supply chains and how firms tackle those challenges, (iii) the role of technology in improving supply chain visibility and enabling new business models, (iv) managing and mitigating risks and making supply chains more resilient, and finally, (v) the emergent theme of incorporating sustainability principles into managing supply chains.
It is envisioned that upon completion of the class sessions you will have: 1) gained a better understanding of the scope of supply chain and operations management within manufacturing and service organizations, 2) gained an understanding of the terminology and current supply chain and operations management practices at leading organizations, 3) had an opportunity to examine your own firm from the standpoint of supply chain and operations management, and 4) gained a better grasp of the kinds of questions you should explore and ask of supply chain and operations management professionals within your own organization.
