Thank you, (Ally and Stephen), for the introduction. And thank you to Dean Li for your warm welcome to Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University.
My name is Steve Parente and it is my honor to stand before you here tonight as the Co-Academic Director of the CHEMBA program. I would like to recognize Professor Lin from Lingnan College, your other Co-Academic Director. Please join me in applauding his great efforts in the CHEMBA program.

It is great to see both our new CHEMBA students and many proud alumni of the CHEMBA program sharing tonight’s ceremony. This has been a special week in the Carlson School of Management. I am joined by the new Dean of the Carlson School, Jamie Prenkert. This is Dean Prenkert’s first visit to China and he has prioritized this trip within his first 100 days in the role. Jamie, thank you for your support of the CHEMBA program and the relationship between the Carlson School of Management and China. Please join me in a round of applause to welcome and recognize Dean Prenkert.
I want to start with some important recognitions. Simon, it has been great getting to see you throughout this week. We are so proud of all you have accomplished as CHEMBA President and President of UMAA Guangzhou. Tonight, we celebrate your accomplishments. Please join me in applauding Simon’s efforts.
Tonight, we also welcome our new President of CHEMBA & UMAA Guangzhou, Raymond Liang. Raymond, we are honored that you will be representing CHEMBA, the Carlson School, and the University of Minnesota. Thank you. Please join me in applauding Raymond.
Preparing students for the world of global business is a key pillar of the Carlson School’s mission and identity since our founding more than a century ago.
You, the alumni here tonight, and those in more than 100 countries around the world, are continuing that legacy, applying advanced business knowledge, leadership skills, and an enhanced global perspective.

My own global perspective has been enriched over the past fourteen years since my visit to China. The warmth and generosity with which we have been welcomed has been incredible.
As we return to Guangzhou in person for the first time in several years, this is a special time to listen, learn, and understand our engagement in this country and how we can best support the many alumni in Guangzhou and across China.
One thing I have gained based on my interactions to date is that people love CHEMBA, the Carlson School and the University of Minnesota. I’ve been struck by how deeply felt that is in the Twin Cities but also here in China. You are doing some amazing things, and we’re so proud to be a part of your journey.
There is a longstanding connection between the University of Minnesota and the people of China. I’m proud that the Carlson School has many academic partners, degree programs, experiential learning opportunities, and alumni across the world.
Our partnership with Lingnan College at Sun Yat Sen University has fostered the creation and sharing of new knowledge, led to enhanced cross-cultural understanding, and an appreciation for what each country brings to the relationship for over 20 years.
Earlier today, I welcomed the newest class of CHEMBA students during their orientation. Doing so recognizes the significance of this intersection between the experienced wisdom and accomplishments of our CHEMBA alumni and the boundless potential of our newest CHEMBA students. It marks not only the beginning of an educational program for these new students, but also the forging of partnerships and cross-cultural ties that will shape their future as global business leaders.

I am proud to report that the Carlson School of Management continues to be a premier public business school in the United States, ranked in the top 10-15 by several publications including The Economist and US News and World Report.
Our faculty are among the most productive in the world, ranking 14th in the world and rank #3 in among U.S. Public Universities for Management in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, also known as the Shanghai rankings;
#7 among U.S. Public Universities in the Management Department Productivity Rankings for 2018-2022 from the Texas A&M University/University of Georgia survey;and
#14 in the World in the Top 100 World Business School Research Rankings for the same period from the University of Texas, Dallas.
Of course, we have challenges too, but as I hope you have heard, there is a lot to be proud of!
In closing, I want to look to the future of CHEMBA as I remind you that the value of your degree is not fixed, it can be enhanced with your engagement and support as current students and as alumni. Every time that you share your CHEMBA experiences, you increase the value in your network. Every time that you recruit a student for CHEMBA, you increase the value of your network.
We are so appreciative that each and every one of you is actively sharing your great experiences in CHEMBA and always looking for the next amazing business leaders to join CHEMBA from your companies and networks.
I am proud to be here in Guangzhou as we celebrate CHEMBA. To our alumni, your support for the school and all that we do is greatly appreciated. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff: Thank you!
