Carlson Scholar Letter from Dean Zaheer

The first challenge in CHEMBA obviously was to adjust my time management for work and life, so to accommodate the intense study schedule. Apart from the textbooks, we also got a substantial amount of reading materials and case studies that ought to be read before each class, not to mention the suggested book list at the end of each course. So the first few courses were difficult as we were trying to adapt to the pace and overload of knowledge and information. As the Chinese ancient wisdom goes, you have to empty the cup before refilling tea. To me in a hindsight, it’s half true. What is also important in this journey, as I reflect afterward and come to conclusion, is that we also need to rebuild our thinking model and structural framework of knowledge, in analogy, it’s reshaping the “cup”. What we benefit directly from the study in the classroom and from the textbook are the new and different types of “tea”, but the valuable dialogues, sometimes even debate, came out from the bonds and dynamics among classmates and professors would serve to prompt thoughts about the “cup”, and I am forever grateful that it did serve such purpose for me. The process of taking in new or different knowledge in the meantime reshaping mental framework is hard, there were moments of self-doubt and feeling stuck, but once you get over it, it’d be a much different horizon and scenery.

Another big realization from this journey is that, when we go deeper in certain disciplines, it’s important to be able to connect the dots and understand the correlation of different theories, tools, and mental models, and weave them into a knowledge web with width and depth. Such thought started to grow when I was halfway into this journey, and I realized that CHEMBA is just the start of a longer journey, the journey to continuously learn, grow, adapt, and get closer to truth bit by bit. 

As the knowledge web expands, its boundary with the unknown world extends, so the more I know, the more I know I don’t know, and hence humbler I have become.  I sincerely welcome you to join me in such an enriching journey and support each other to become a better self.

       在CHEMBA遇到的第一个挑战就是时间管理，如何更好的平衡工作与生活，使我能够适应紧张的课程安排。除了教材，我们还有大量的阅读材料和案例研究需要我们在课前阅读，更不要说每次课后的推荐书目。课程初期，我们努力调整跟上课程进度，吸收超出我们负荷的知识，这一过程是有难度的。

2016年  美国明尼苏达大学

       中国有句古话：“你必须先把杯子清空，才能往里倒茶。”事后看来，这句话有一半是对的。当我回顾思考这一段旅程，我得出了结论：这段旅程中同样重要的，是重建我们的思维模式和构建新的知识框架，类比来看，这就相当于为“茶杯”再次塑形。而我们从课堂和课本学习中直接获得的则是全新的不同的“茶”，同学们和教授们联系和互动时的对话，甚至是争辩，会激发我们对“茶杯”的思考。这些对话非常珍贵，对我产生了深远的影响，我将永远对它们心怀感激。与此同时，吸收截然不同的新知识，重建心理框架的过程是艰难的，也有自我怀疑和陷入困境的时候，一旦你克服了它，你将获得完全不同的视野和风景。
